Relocate Your Router
Router placement is the single biggest factor in WiFi performance. Most people leave the router wherever the technician installed it, usually near the point where the cable enters the house, which is often a corner or basement. This is typically the worst possible location.
Move the router to a central location in your home, as high as possible. WiFi signals radiate outward and slightly downward from the antennas. A router in a corner of the house wastes half its signal broadcasting into the yard. A router in the center reaches all rooms more evenly. Elevate it on a shelf or mount it on a wall rather than leaving it on the floor.
Reduce Interference
Microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, and Bluetooth devices all operate on or near the 2.4GHz frequency band that WiFi uses. Keep your router away from these devices. Thick walls, metal surfaces, large mirrors, and fish tanks attenuate WiFi signals. If your router sits behind a metal filing cabinet or next to a large mirror, moving it a few feet can make a dramatic difference.
Change the WiFi Channel
In apartments and dense neighborhoods, dozens of WiFi networks compete on the same channels. Log into your router's admin interface (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in a browser) and check the current channel. For 2.4GHz, channels 1, 6, and 11 are the only non-overlapping options; choose the one with the least competition. For 5GHz, there are more channels available and less congestion.
Free apps like WiFi Analyzer (Android) or Airport Utility (Mac) show which channels nearby networks are using, helping you pick the least crowded option.
Update Router Firmware
Router manufacturers release firmware updates that fix bugs, improve performance, and patch security vulnerabilities. Most routers do not update automatically. Log into the admin interface and check for available updates. Outdated firmware can cause connection drops, speed reduction, and security risks.
Optimize Band Settings
Most modern routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. The 5GHz band is faster but has shorter range. The 2.4GHz band is slower but penetrates walls better. If your router combines both into a single network name (band steering), devices sometimes stick to the slower 2.4GHz band when 5GHz is available.
Try creating separate network names for each band (e.g., HomeWiFi and HomeWiFi-5G). Manually connect devices near the router to the 5GHz network and devices farther away to 2.4GHz. This manual assignment often produces better results than automatic band steering.
Reboot Regularly
Rebooting your router clears the memory, resets connections, and forces it to re-select the best channel. A weekly reboot prevents the gradual performance degradation that occurs as connection tables fill and memory leaks accumulate. Many routers have a scheduled reboot option in the admin settings.
