Understanding USB-C Standards and Cables

USB-C is a connector shape, not a single standard. The same physical port can carry wildly different speeds, power levels, and capabilities depending on the underlying protocol. This makes buying USB-C cables confusing, because a cable that charges your phone might not transfer data to your monitor.

The Connector vs The Protocol

USB-C describes the reversible, oval-shaped physical connector. USB 3.2, USB4, and Thunderbolt describe the protocol (rules for data transfer). A USB-C cable might support USB 2.0 (480 Mbps), USB 3.2 (5-20 Gbps), USB4 (40 Gbps), or Thunderbolt 4/5 (40-80 Gbps). The cable looks the same in every case.

Speed Standards

USB 2.0: 480 Mbps. Fine for charging and basic peripherals. USB 3.2 Gen 1: 5 Gbps. Good for external drives. USB 3.2 Gen 2: 10 Gbps. Fast external SSDs. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2: 20 Gbps. USB4: 20-40 Gbps. Thunderbolt 4: 40 Gbps. Thunderbolt 5: 80 Gbps (120 Gbps asymmetric).

Power Delivery

USB Power Delivery (PD) allows up to 240W through USB-C. Not all cables or devices support maximum power. Check both the cable rating and the charger output. A 5A cable is needed for over 60W charging; a 3A cable handles up to 60W.

Display Output

USB-C can carry video via DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt. One cable can drive an external monitor. Check that your laptop port supports display output, as not all USB-C ports do.

How to Buy the Right Cable

Read the specifications, not just the marketing name. For charging only: any USB-C cable works. For fast data transfer: ensure the cable specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 or higher. For displays: look for Thunderbolt or DP Alt Mode support. For everything: Thunderbolt 4 cables support all use cases but cost more.

Labeling Improvements

The USB-IF now requires cables to display their data speed and wattage ratings. Look for printed specs on the cable or packaging showing speed (Gbps) and power (watts). This helps cut through the naming confusion.
